The skin is not alone a covering for the protection of the body; it is one of the most active and extensive channels for the separation from the body of those materials which have been used up in the functions of the animal economy. It is a familiar fact, that if a rabbit be varnished, so as to close the pores of the skin and arrest the usual function of this organ, the animal dies in a few hours. The effect is just the same as if those important organs of excretion, the kidneys, be removed from the body. The skin separates from the system almost as much waste material as the kidneys, the lungs and the intestines together.
